Islamabad: The World Bank (WB) has okayed the use of emergency procedures to formulate and implement Karachi’s Solid Waste Emergency and Efficiency Project (SWEEP) in wake of the solid waste management’s network deterioration, the widespread urban flooding, and the public health emergency ensued by the recent monsoon spells, according to a news report published today (September 17).

The WB has designed SWEEP for Karachi with a proposed allocation of USD 100 million to assist the Government of Sindh’s efforts in mitigating the flood-impact. The scheme’s approval is expected by the next month.
Moreover, the SWEEP’s proposed plan will finance the interventions planned to be implemented in two phases. In the first ‘immediate emergency response phase’ – with efforts aimed at mitigating high flooding risks caused by the accumulation of solid waste in the city’s drainage system.

The second ‘medium-to-long-term’ phase envisages enhancement of the solid waste management infrastructure and the service delivery to eliminate any recurring risks of urban flooding in the metropolis.
As per the reported estimates, the city generates 12,000-16,000 tonnes of solid waste each day – 60% of which is transported to two large, yet poorly managed, dumps located in Gond Pass and Jam Chakro.
