Lahore: The incumbent government is in the process of developing an application – based on the workings of WhatsApp – for facilitating communications among government departments, a news source reported. As per officials, the said facility is expected to address data breach concerns.

Prime Minister (PM)’s Focal Person on Digital Media Dr Arslan Khalid said that they were currently working on improving cyber security, and developing a messaging application based on WhatsApp model for government officials. He added that the app would protect sensitive and classified information from hostile spying agencies and hackers.

The government decided to develop this application following reports in October about applications loaded with malware targeting the country’s government and military institutions. After the successful development of the digital platform, all federal ministries will share official documents through this channel.

National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology Chairman Ali Khan Jadoon said that the network would have the ministries of Defence and Interiors, along with other departments on it for preventing leaks of sensitive data. He added that users would only be able to access the application through a unique ID.
