Islamabad: The construction of the Leh Expressway will begin this year, a news source quoted Minister for Railways Sheikh Rasheed as saying. He added that the construction of the PKR 80 billion project was important for minimising the risk of floods in Rawalpindi.

During a visit to Leh, Rasheed said that a number of construction companies had shown interest in the 26-kilometre (km)-long Leh Expressway project. He stated that it was necessary to constrict the Leh Expressway, along with flood channels, in order to protect the city from floods.
Referring to the ongoing monsoon season in the country, he instructed the Rawalpindi city management to stay on alert in order to prevent and resolve any untoward incidents.

According to sources, the Leh expressway would start from Peshawar Morr, Islamabad and stretch all the way to Swan Bridge near Lahore High Court. It was revealed that once completed, the project will help uplift the look of the entire city.
