Islamabad: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar stated on Wednesday (August 25) that work on the much-delayed 43-kilometre-long Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) will begin in September, according to news reports.

The minister instructed the Railway Ministry to collaborate with the Public Private Partnership Authority (P3A) to concurrently strategize and work on PPP components of the KCR project to save money and time. According to the details, the KCR project will feature 15 stops and will employ ecologically friendly electric trains.

The meeting was advised that the project is on schedule to be finished within the time frame previously set. Minister Umar also stated that the 50-kilometre Freight Corridor project from Keamari/KPT to Pipri Marshalling will begin soon. The project is projected to handle 40% of the intercountry freight. Previously, in 2020, a Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) estimated that the cost of the project will be around USD 2.6 billion.
