Karachi: Representative of Trans Karachi and a construction firm on Monday (August 23) signed an agreement to start construction on the much delayed 29-kilometre-long Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, news sources reported. The work on the Asia Development Bank (ADB)-funded project will start within 90 days.

The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), also known as Karachi Breeze Red Line Project, will be regulated by the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) while the project will be executed by Trans Karachi. The Red Line Metro will connect Model Colony to Namaish Chowrangi through Airport, Safura Chowrangi, Meteorology, and University Road. The 29-kilometre-long Red Line BRT will feature 24 stops and 213 buses and will intersect the Green Line project at Jinnah Avenue.

The Sindh government is expected to spend PKR 78.384 billion, with the rest of the funds coming from ADB, the UN Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) of France. When completed, the project will be able to handle up to 300,000 passengers per day.
