Rawalpindi: The Punjab government has decided to remodel Defence Chowk and turn it into a signal-free corridor during the fiscal year 2021-22, where development work on the project is expected to start by the end of August or the start of September this year, a news source reported.

The project is estimated to cost PKR 300 million. The authorities are hopeful to complete the expansion, renovation and remodelling of the Defence Chowk in one year after initiation of development work. Defence Chowk’s remodelling will ease traffic congestion in Rawalpindi by providing a signal-free route to the traffic heading to and from the city to GT Road.
As per the details shared by the Punjab Parliamentary Secretary Revenue Adnan Chaudhary, the project has been made part of the provincial Annual Development Programme for 2021-22. In addition to that, he revealed that funds have been reserved for the project. He thanked Punjab Chief Minister for the approval and issuance of funds for remodelling of Defence Chowk, Rawalpindi.

Earlier in November 2020, National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) finalised and presented the design and feasibility report of the project before the concerned authorities. As per the statistics shared in this report, the Defense Chowk is utilised by as many as 138,414 vehicles on a daily basis, leading to an increase in traffic jams. Later in January 2021, Rawalpindi Commissioner Captain (R) Muhammad Mehmood asked the concerned authorities to present the project’s PC-1 so that development work could be initiated on a priority basis.
