Quetta: The authorities concerned have begun installing cameras on the Airport Road as part of the Quetta Safe City project, which will become operational in January 2020 – a news source reported.

As many as 300 cameras will be installed under this project. This initiative is expected to be completed within 16 months. The first phase will cover Quetta and Gwadar. The total cost of the project is approximately PKR 2.84 billion. It will later be expanded to other cities of Balochistan.
The Quetta Safe City project was included in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2014. An agreement to this effect was signed with the Special Communications Organisation (SCO) last year.
Secretary Science & Technology Mehboob Ahmed Shahwani said that the purpose of this initiative is to maintain law and order in the city. Its control room will be established in the office of DIG Quetta Police.

DIG Quetta Razzaq Cheema said that the project will be handed over to the police after its completion. He added that a smart city initiative will be launched in the next phase.
