Islamabad’s public transport network is set for a major upgrade as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has initiated work on the Mass Transit Master Plan 2030 with technical assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The plan aims to improve connectivity and enhance the city’s transport infrastructure.
During a virtual meeting, CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa and an ADB delegation discussed key aspects of the plan, including the expansion of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, introduction of rail cars, and further investment in transport infrastructure. Senior CDA officials, including Member Planning Dr. Khalid Hafeez and DG Resources Shakeel Ahmed, also participated in the discussion.

A major component of the plan is the Islamabad Intercity Bus Terminal project, which is expected to integrate with the BRT system and electric buses. Officials confirmed that the pre-feasibility study has been completed, and a detailed feasibility study is currently underway. The project will include dedicated charging infrastructure for electric buses to support environmentally friendly transport options.
Chairman Randhawa emphasized the need to fast-track the Intercity Bus Terminal project in phases and directed the ADB team to develop a sustainable operational and financial model in line with government approvals and technical requirements.

The ADB delegation praised CDA’s efforts to modernize Islamabad’s transport system and assured full cooperation in supporting these transit initiatives. With these developments, Islamabad is set to move towards a more efficient, eco-friendly, and well-integrated mass transit network by 2030.
