Lahore: The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Tuesday intimated Pakistan’s positioning among the top 10 countries in the world with the highest number of ‘new coronavirus cases’; suggesting that the country should increase its testing capacity to 50,000 tests per day to get a better picture of the actual prevalence rate of the infection, according to news sources.

The WHO has written a letter to all four provinces saying that the ease of lockdown restrictions was not a recommended move – given the high positivity rate and seriousness of the situation. Additionally, the organisation has urged the provinces to impose a two-week lockdown to contain the viral from spread. The WHO has stressed for Pakistan to adopt two weeks off and two weeks on strategy – given its effective results.

Moreover, the letter has also urged the government to develop its health measures like quarantine, self-isolation, social distancing and patient tracing to limit the coronavirus spread and offer better medical services to the affected. It stated that the current positivity rate in Pakistan is at 24%, which is above the required level of 5%.
Furthermore, the letter urges Pakistan to make strategic decision to tighten or loosen public health measures while also securing economic progress, food security and human rights.
