Karachi: Foreign Minister (FM) Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Monday (November 14) urged the Sindh government to develop weather-resilient houses for flood victims to enable them to live peacefully even if another natural calamity hits, according to news sources.

FM Zardari was chairing a meeting held to review the losses and damages caused by the heavy rains in Sindh and the protective measures taken by the provincial government. The minister opined that in view of climate change, there is a need for the development of weather-resilient houses. He said, ‘We need houses that can withstand droughts, downpours, storms, floods, and such other disasters’.
Minister Zardari was briefed by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, who informed the meeting the recent flood has completely and partially damaged some 1.7 million houses and there is an urgent need for providing shelter to displaced people. The foreign minister suggest that picking weather-resilient technology might consume more time and insisted that the package for the construction of damaged houses must be finalised at the earliest.

In response, the CM informed that the government has arranged for PKR 220 billion, which includes funds from World Bank, the federal government and other provinces. Mr Syed revealed that the estimated funding needed for providing houses was PKR 300 billion.
