Lahore: The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has started working on the conservation and preservation of religious places in the different parts of Punjab, after the completion of the initial phase of documentation and mapping, news sources reported.

The Punjab government has assigned projects to WCLA through Auqaf Department and Human Rights and Minorities Affairs Department. As per the details, 8 shrines, 6 churches, and a temple will be preserved across the province. The preservation and conservation of shrines, temples, and churches will be carried out for the first time according to international standards. The shrines to be conserved include:
- Hazrat Mian Meer, Madhu Lal Hussain, Shah Husain and Bibi Pak Daman in Lahore
- Darbar Baba Fariduddin Ganj Shakar in Pakpattan
- Hazarat Khawaja Ghulam Fareed in Kot Mithan
- Hazrat Shah Shams in Multan
- Tombs of Shah Rukn-e-Alam and Bahauddin Zakariya

Reportedly, the Presbyterian Church on Nicolson Road, Sacred Heart Cathedral Church, and Cathedral Church of The Resurrection in Lahore will be preserved. Other churches include St Mary the Virgin Cathedral Church in Multan, St Francis Assisi Sahowala in Sialkot, and Christ Church in Rawalpindi. The Shivala Mandir in Sialkot will also be conserved.
Moreover, the WCLA was expected to complete the projects by June next year. It was shared that the funds will be provided by the Punjab government and WCLA will implement the project.
Sharing details about the preservation cost, the estimated cost of rehabilitating Baba Farid’s shrine in Pakpattan was PKR 32.89 million while the total cost of preserving shrines of Shah Hussain, Madhu Lal, Mian Meer, and Barkat Ali Islamia Hall will be PKR 100 million. The shrines of Khawaja Fareed and Hazrat Shah Shams along with tombs of Shah Rukn-e-Alam and Bahauddin Zakariya will be PKR 100 million.

As far as the churches and temple are concerned, the cost of preservation of St Francis Assisi Sahowala in Sialkot will be PKR 24.8 million, Presbyterian Church on Nicolson Road in Lahore will be PKR 25 million, St Marry the Virgin Cathedral Church in Multan will be PKR 39 million, Christ Church in Rawalpindi will be PKR 29 million, Sacred Heart Cathedral Church in Lahore will be PKR 15 million, and Cathedral Church of The Resurrection Lahore will be PKR 13.7 million. The preservation of Shivala Mandir Sialkot will cost PKR 24.7 million.
