Karachi: The Sindh government has sought the World Bank’s assistance in developing two solar parks with a total power generation capacity of up to 890 megawatts (MW) in a bid to provide sustainable and clean electricity to the province, a news source reported on November 20.

Energy Minister Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh communicated the government’s request during a video conference with World Bank officials including Senior Energy Specialist Oliver Knight. The minister stated that one of the proposed solar parks, to be established District Jamshoro’s Manjhabd area, will have a power generation capacity of 560MWs. Similarly, the other solar park with the capacity to generate 330 MW will be established in District Thatta’s Gharo.

The energy minister opined that these solar parks will help utilise renewable resources of energy for clean electricity production and help overcome the persisting issue of power shortfall. He revealed that both federal government and K-Electric will be requested to purchase alternative electricity generated by these parks. He also revealed the Sindh government’s decision to power the public hospitals in the province offering coronavirus treatment with solar energy.
It was communicated the cost of the project to solarise 29 such government hospitals will be around PKR 1.2 billion and the project will be completed by March 2021.
