Islamabad: The World Bank (WB) on Tuesday said that it would consider funding the construction of the Peshawar-Torkham Highway project next year, a news source reported.

A meeting to this effect took place between Minister for Planning, Development and Reform Khusro Bakhtiar and WB Country Director Patchamuthu Illangovan in Islamabad.
Secretary Planning Zafar Hasan, Secretary Economic Affairs Division Noor Ahmed, and Planning Commission Member Infrastructure Malik Ahmed Khan were all present at the occasion.

According to officials, WB would continue to fund agriculture, health and education sectors under its existing partnership agreement with Pakistan. It would also consider financing the Peshawar-Torkham Highway project.
Director Illangovan further said that his organisation anticipated enormous benefits as the highway project would open new vistas of cross-border trade.

In response, the planning minister highlighted his government’s strategy for developing the marginalised regions of the country. Moreover, he sought the international agency’s cooperation for this purpose.
