Islamabad: The World Bank (WB) will fund the construction of two hydroelectric power projects in the Swat district this year, news sources reported. The projects include Maiden Hydropower Project (with a power generation capacity of 157 megawatts (MW)) and Gabral Kalam Hydropower Project (with a power generation capacity of 88 MW).

Reportedly, the announcement was made by WB Senior Energy Specialist Muhammad Saqib during a meeting with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization. It was announced that WB will offer USD 450 million to the provincial government, which will be used for the construction and operations of the hydroelectric projects. In addition, once completed in 2027, the project will earn a net income of PKR 13 billion annually for the provincial government of KP.

It is also worth noting that the World Bank is supporting a floating solar energy project in partnership with the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA). The initiative will be the country’s first of its kind to address energy-related issues.
