Karachi: The Supreme Court (SC)-mandated judicial commission on water and sanitation has sent its comprehensive recommendations to the court, according to a news report. The commission advised that the Sindh government should conduct a new survey of all water supply and drainage schemes. This will help the authorities identify any deficiencies within the system.
The commission headed by Justice (retd) Amir Hani Muslim will complete its tenure on January 14. The report includes several short and long-term proposals. It observed that rehabilitating all existing water supply and drainage schemes may not be enough to resolve issues. There are areas in Sindh where no facilities for clean drinking water are available.
The recommendations included a suggestion for Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) to prepare a master plan for water distribution and sanitation. This will help meet both the existing and future water demands of the metropolis.
The commission’s other recommendations were as follows:
- Formation of a task force to oversee KWSB
- Up-gradation of the billing and collection mechanism of KWSB
- Overhaul of Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA)
- Survey of industrial areas by SEPA
- Identification and establishment of landfill sites for all districts of Sindh
- Developers should be compelled to file environment assessment documents
