Lahore: The Housing Department has prepared a project to lay new sewerage lines via tunnel boring in selected parts of the city, reported a news source. The project details have been sent to Punjab Planning and Development Department for approval.

Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will fund the project. Reportedly, Water and Sanitation Authority and AIIB have agreed on terms for this project. If P&D approves the proposal, the tunnel sewer system could become the first sewerage project that will not require digging.

Under this project, WASA will lay sewerage pipelines 35 feet deep in the ground through tunnel boring. The areas identified for the project include Samnabad, Mian Mir, Upper Mall, Shadman and McLeod Road. WASA will lay a 14-kilometre long tunnel sewer system in these areas. A disposal station will be set up in Gulshan Ravi.

The project is estimated to cost PKR 14 billion. Once PO&D approves the project, it will be sent to the Federal Planning Commission for final approval.
