Rawalpindi: The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) will launch the Chahan Dam water supply project this year, according to a news source. The total cost of the venture is expected to amount to PKR 5.3 billion. From this figure, the finance department will release PKR 50 million in 2019.
The Punjab Government approved the project last year.
The dam will supply six million gallons of water on a daily basis, and will be built on the Sill Kus River -near Chakri. It is expected to cost PKR 1.6 billion in construction expenses.
WASA requested for the initial PKR 50 million instalment to be released this year. This amount will be used to procure land, and begin construction formalities. An official said the project will be completed within two years’ time, with the work being carried out in three phases.
The first phase will involve land attainment. Machinery will be procured in the second phase. In the third phase, the water line network will be laid down.
WASA spokesperson Umar Farooq greatly emphasised the project’s importance. He said that it will help alleviate the country’s water shortage problems.
