Rawalpindi: The Water and Sanitation Authority (WASA) has prepared a summary pertaining to a 200% increase in water bills, a news source reported. The provincial minister for housing and physical planning has approved WASA’s proposal to increase the water tariff.
It has been suggested to set the minimum monthly tariff at PKR 600 for households covering five marlas of land. A summary in this regard will be dispatched to the Punjab government for approval.
The water regulatory authority also plans to fix the per litre cost of water. The megaproject will cost PKR 500 million over five years. Paperwork for the project has been completed and release of PKR 1 million has been approved.
WASA will also install metres which will be approved at a cost of PKR 10,000 to be paid by the consumer. To ensure the success of the project, 109 new personnel will be recruited including metre readers, metre inspectors, mechanic helpers, and mechanical sub-engineers.
Water will be billed per unit in a system similar to gas and electricity billing. Recommendations for the installation of water metres had been sent to Planning & Development Department, which have been approved.
