Lahore: The data collected by Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Lahore revealed a total of PKR 1.5 billion owed in terms of outstanding dues towards private and cooperative housing societies for using the agency’s services, news sources reported on Thursday (December 16). The defaulter list includes at least 74 housing developments, the majority of which are located on Multan Road and Raiwind Road.

According to the reports, under government laws, societies that use the drains and the WASA-managed sewage systems must pay service costs. However, private and cooperative housing schemes have been negligent in paying their outstanding dues, which totalled PKR 1.7 billion, of which, the societies have only paid PKR 260 million so far. Following is a breakdown of the outstanding amount;
- PKR 999 million are pending towards 33 private housing societies connected with the WASA sewerage system
- PKR 344 million pending towards 19 cooperative housing societies connected with the WASA sewerage system
- PKR 354 million is pending towards 18 cooperative housing societies connected with WASA’s Satto Katla Drain.
- PKR 55.4 million pending towards four private housing schemes connected with WASA’s Satto Katla Drain

WASA Managing Director (MD) Syed Zahid Aziz told the media that the agency has devised a strategy to collect the unpaid payments. Following the initial warnings and notices, WASA will disconnect connections and work with the Metropolitan Planning Wing to stop the approval of maps of these defaulter societies.
