Lahore: The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) and a Chinese firm on Tuesday (March 15) signed an agreement to install smart water meters across the provincial capital, news sources reported. The Xiang Lahore Water Metering Company will be responsible for switching all the manual meters with 711,000 smart meters and maintenance for the next ten years.

The company will also establish a smart meter manufacturing plant in Lahore, creating opportunities for locals. Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Sardar Usman Buzdar attended the agreement signing event and stated that the corporation would replace 93% of the domestic and 7% of commercial water meters to monitor water usage. In addition, the meter will eliminate manual reading, and the WASA will be able to record meter readings remotely. He also announced that similar projects will be extended to other major metropolitans in the province.

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister (SACM) Hasaan Khawar highlighted that a total of PKR 191 billion worth of projects are currently in the pipeline across the province under the Public-Private Partnership (3P) framework. In addition, he said that the government has made it easier to do business by creating the Investment Facilitation Center, Special Economic Zones, and the ‘Zero NOC’ policy.
