Karachi: The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has awarded three contracts worth PKR 98.5 billion, for the construction of phase-I of the Greater Karachi Water Supply Scheme (K-IV), according to news published on June 10.

The agreements were signed at the WAPDA Mega Hydel Projects Complex between WAPDA General Manager (South) Projects, Project Director for K-IV, and representatives of the contractors. Federal Minister for Water Resources Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, speaking at the ceremony, mentioned that the said project is significant for the country as it will address the issue of water supply to the economic hub.
Moreover, the attendees were briefed about phase-I of the K-IV project. It was informed that under phase-I, construction work will be started in Malir, Karachi West, and Thatta. The PC-I of the project is approved at the cost of PKR 126.5 billion. The said project will supply 260 MGD of water to the port city. The details of the three contracts signed are as follows:

- Contract Package K-IV PL-I, worth PKR 52.71 billion, was for pressurised water transmission MS pipelines and allied work from RD 0 to RD 64+200
- Contract Package K-IV PL-II, worth PKR 28.846 billion, was for pressurised water transmission MS pipelines and allied work from RD 64+200 to RD 111+700
- Contract Package K-IV PS, worth PKR 17.40 billion, was for construction and engineering procurement
Additionally, the project will be completed in eight packages, out of which contracts for two have already been awarded while three were recently awarded. It was also disclosed that the contracts for the remaining will be awarded in the coming 10 days.

Reportedly, construction work is expected to be started in the first week of July and phase-I of K-IV is scheduled to be completed by October 2023.
