Lahore: The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) on Tuesday awarded the contract for construction work of Mohmand Dam to a joint venture of China Gezhouba Group of Companies (CGGC) and DESCON Pakistan, a news source reported.

A ceremony to this effect took place at the WAPDA House in Lahore. At the event, officials from the water agency claimed to have saved PKR 18 billion by awarding the contract at a figure of PKR 183.5 billion.

WAPDA Chairman Lt General (retired) Muzammil Hussain said that the project would contribute towards furthering the water, food and energy security of Pakistan.

He added that WAPDA was committed to completing the project on an urgent basis. He said that Mohmand Dam would contribute to the country’s economy.

Reportedly, the dam will have the capacity to store about 1.2 million acres feet (MAF) of water and generate 800 megawatts (MW) of hydel electricity. It would also help contain floodwaters in Peshawar, Charsadda and Nowshera.
