Lahore: LDA Chief Town Planner Tariq Mehmood has said that vertical growth should be encouraged by all stakeholders so that high-rise structures with the provision of state-of-the-art facilities could be constructed – a news source reported.
Mehmood was speaking at a seminar of building and town planning experts. He further added that a draft paper on proposed amendments to building bylaws, land-use rules and regulations has been prepared in consultation with major stakeholders.

He said that estimates suggest there is a huge gap between demand and supply of housing units. As per conservative estimates, the urban housing demand in Pakistan is around 350,000 housing units per year, while the supply is around 150,000 units per year.

In addition to that, there is a huge backlog of over 8.5 million residential units and this number is ballooning with the shortfall of 200,000 additional units each year.
He said that this was all the more reason to focus on vertical planning and construction.
