Lahore: As a measure to control smog in the province, the Environment Protection Agency has decided to shut down the kilns producing bricks in the traditional, old-fashioned way from October 20 onwards, reported a news source. In this regard, the kiln owners have also been issued warnings.
The EPA has directed the kiln owners to incorporate the use of modern technology for brick production as the traditional kilns produce more smoke. Incorporation of the “Zig-Zag system” by the EPA promises to bring down the smoke emitted by these kilns by 70% and it also saves fuel. Upgrading the kiln to the new system costs about PKR 2.5 million per kiln.
For better incorporation of the new technology, a delegation from Nepal will visit Punjab on September 3, 2018. The delegation will prepare recommendations for implementing the “Zig Zag System” on request of the EPA.
