Lahore: The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) will start refurbishment work on Mangla Dam, a news source reported. The authority signed the USD 78 million Project Implementation Letter (PIL)-2 for Mangla Refurbishment Project (MRP) with USAID in this regard.
WAPDA Chairman Lt General (retired) Muzammil Hussain and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director in Pakistan Jerry Bisson signed the document on behalf of their respective organisations.
WAPDA will spend the USAID grant on various works of Package V-IX of the project. In 2014, the authority had signed PIL-1 worth USD 72 million for MRP with USAID.
After its completion, MRP will enhance generation capacity of the existing Mangla Hydel Power Station from 1,000MW to 1,310MW. The refurbishment works have been divided into 11 different packages which will be implemented in various phases. Refurbishment of the first two units will be completed next year, while refurbishment of all 10 generating units will be completed by 2024.
