Previously, the parliament had passed the law which mandated that only approved project should be included in the budget. The move is expected to improve the efficiency in use of funds, and to help the incumbent government have a neater development portfolio, unencumbered by political expediency.
However, this move could potentially mean that ML-I project under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) may also be dropped for a year, although the government still has the time to approve it.

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has approved June 12 as the date to announce the upcoming Budget 2020-21, so any project that needs to make it into the budget has to be approved by the National Economic Council (NEC) in its June 8 meeting. Reportedly, the meeting will be chaired by the prime minister.
