Lahore: The United Nations (UN) is working to launch a project to map the glaciers of northern Pakistan to help develop an early warning system to minimize losses during natural calamities, according to news published on September 16.

Under this initiative, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) will map as many as 5,000 glaciers in the coming 1.5 years to quantify the rate at which the ice is melting. This information was revealed by UNDP Representative in Pakistan Knut Ostby, who highlighted that the country has one of the highest numbers of glaciers in the world.
Mr Otsby stated that UNDP will set up early warning systems in the northern areas including; Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and revealed that another 110 valleys will also require the installation of such systems.
