Lahore: The trial operations for the Karot Hydropower Project with 720 megawatts (MW) power generation capacity have been initiated, according to news published on May 15.

Reportedly, it is the first hydropower project launched under the China-Pakistan-Economic-Corridor (CPEC). Presently, two of the four units/turbines of the Karot Hydropower Project have begun generating 360 MW of power during the trial run. The remaining two units will become operational by June 25 and the project is expected to be officially launched on June 30 by the prime minister, the source reported.
A Private Power Infrastructure Board (PPIB) official has revealed that the third unit will also start running in the next 10 days, and the fourth will commence working on June 15 for trial purposes. It was also highlighted that the Karot Hydropower Project was scheduled to be completed by August. However, the fast pace of development of various project phases enabled the team to complete it by June 30.

The work related to the installation of a transmission line connected to the national grid, the water filling of the pond, and the test runs of the four turbines have already been completed. The project is being developed on the Jhelum River at the dual boundary of Punjab, Rawalpindi and Kotli and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K). The other two hydropower projects being developed under CPEC include 870-MW Sukki Kenari Hydropower Project and 1,124-MW Kohala Hydropower Project.
