Karachi: The Sindh government on Saturday (May 16) announced its decision to resume public transport (bus and ride-hailing) services after the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, according to news sources.
There has been a ban on all kinds of public transport services in Sindh for over two months now, in a bid to contain the coronavirus spread.

To compensate for the losses incurred by transporters and in acknowledgment of their cooperation with the provincial government amid the COVID-19 lockdown, Sindh Transport Minister Syed Awais Shah has announced a ‘generous’ relief package; which, following implementation, will involve exemptions on several taxes and duties for the transporter’s fraternity, he added.

Minister Awais also revealed that a summary in this regard had been forwarded to Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah. Once approved, local transporters could also expect a reduction in traffic violation fines, he said.
On a cautionary note, the transport minister said that the public transportation would only be allowed to operate if the government’s defined anti-COVID standard operating procedures (SOPs) were strictly adhered to by both passengers and transporters.
