Lahore: Pakistan Railways (PR) has received 70 new freight wagons from China boosting its freight carriage capacity, news purses reported on January 15.

The new freight trains arrived at the Karachi Port from China on Monday and were received by the PR technical teams. According to a Pakistan Railways spokesperson, an additional 130 wagons will be added to the system by March, increasing the trend of freight movement by railways. The spokesperson also mentioned that under a transfer of technology agreement, 620 wagons will be manufactured in Pakistan, saving the national exchequer and creating employment opportunities.
According to the sources, adding new wagons is expected to increase Pakistan Railways’ revenue by PKR 1.5 billion by diverting the freight movement through roads to the rail system. The new wagons have a maximum speed of 100 kilometres per hour and a freight capacity of 70 tons, compared to the existing wagons which can only run at 80 kilometres per hour and have 60 tons capacity.
