Islamabad: Pakistan and Azerbaijan have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in energy, trade, and aviation, reflecting the longstanding relationship between the two nations, according to news published in the leading newspaper on June 15.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev to discuss introducing flights between Islamabad and Baku along with trade and energy cooperation between Azerbaijan and Pakistan. During the meeting, cooperation in various sectors was discussed increasing military exercises and exploring opportunities in energy, investment, and education. He praised President Aliyev’s leadership in infrastructure development and horticulture and requested Azerbaijan’s expertise in horticulture and waste management.
Moreover, both leaders emphasized the strong bond between the two countries, acknowledging the need for enhanced trade and investment. The prime minister highlighted Pakistan’s energy challenges and commitment to transitioning to solar energy. He thanked Azerbaijan for exempting duties on Pakistani rice and invited Azerbaijan Airlines to operate flights to Islamabad. The prime minister also extended an invitation for President Aliyev to visit Pakistan and expressed interest in further discussions on petroleum and solar energy cooperation.

President Aliyev welcomed the prime minister’s delegation, expressed support for increased cooperation in energy, defence, and education, and highlighted the importance of the military capacity for ensuring independence and territorial integrity.
