Karachi: Thar Coal Power Project will become operational from January 2019 and will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Imran Khan, a news source quoted Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company CEO Shamsuddin Sheikh. He shared these details while talking to media during his visit to the project site.
The transmission line project for Thar Coal Power Plant has already been completed. Under this project, Pakistan will be able to produce 4,000 megawatts of cheap electricity by 2024. The project is currently being assessed on technical basis. Thar Coal project will add life to the power sector in the country that’s home to coal reserves of PKR 181 billion. In Thar alone, the coal reserves worth PKR 175 billion have been discovered.
Sharing his insight on improving the power generation sector, Sheikh said that production cost has to be brought down in addition to fixing line losses and nabbing electricity theft. He also hinted that coal reserves in Pakistan and their quality is fine enough to be considered for export. Sheikh also believes that the coal reserves should also be used for purposes other than producing power.
