Karachi: The two coal-fired power plants in Thar will begin generating electricity at their full capacity of 660 megawatts (MW) by the middle of June, a news source reported Sindh Minister for Energy Imtiaz Shaikh as saying. Both plants possess an individual power production capacity of 330MW, and collectively attained the generation capacity of 500MW during their testing period. Shaikh stated that both will now generate 660MW in unison (their collective full capacity) by the second week of June 2019.

Shaikh revealed this information during a meeting presided over by Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah at the CM House. The CM remarked that reaching 550MW generation capacity comprised the achievement of a milestone. He added that he would visit the plants when they begin generating at full capacity.
The CM directed the Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) to begin expansion of mining expand its mining efforts during the project’s phase one. The meeting further discussed Hubco setting up two power plants – of 330MW each – at the Thar Coal site.

The officials concerned informed the meeting that work was underway in collaboration with Hubco’s partners, namely Thar Energy Limited (TEL) and Thal Nova Power Thar Limited (TNPTL). They added that these projects were part phase-II of SECMC Block-II. TNPTL, meanwhile, was in the advanced stage of arranging finances.
