Lahore: The Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA) Lahore has proposed changes in building bylaws to promote rooftop gardening and plantation in the city, according to news published on Tuesday (January 4).

According to TEPA Chief Engineer Abdul Razzaq Chauhan, in the first phase, indigenous trees will be planted on the newly-constructed commercial buildings. In the second phase, the plantation will be made compulsory in the balconies and on the roof of the tall buildings. He further added that the relevant authorities have extended cooperation regarding the plantation of trees on the commercial buildings.
Moreover, TEPA Chief Engineer Chauhan stated that planting more trees will help eradicate air pollution and smog. He went on to say that the rooftop plantation will also promote urban agriculture. In this way, people will also produce fresh vegetables and other agricultural foods.
Sharing details about the technical requirement for rooftop plantation, the chief engineer stated that the integrity and strength of the building was a major consideration before starting the plantation campaign. He mentioned that certain factors should be considered including the weight of the rooftop garden. Furthermore, the building should have a waterproofing system installed with proper drainage, rainfall management systems and protection mats.

It is pertinent to note that the Lahore High Court (LHC) has, recently, ordered the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and concerned authorities to introduce tree plantations on multi-storied buildings.
