Karachi: Minister for Railways Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed on Monday revealed that the railways department would soon issue a USD 6.8 billion tender for the Main Line (ML) -1 project, according to news sources.

He further stated that the anticipated economic and social benefits of the ML-1 project included the creation of 150,000 employment opportunities and the enhancement of the freight business. He said that 90% of the said employment opportunities will be reserved for locals.
Regarding the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) project, he said that it is was currently being executed on an urgent basis as per the directives of the Supreme Court. Minister Rasheed also said that the coaches for the KCR track were under construction in Islamabad.

He revealed that out of the earmarked PKR 10.5 billion for the KCR, PKR 1.8 billion had been released and a 9km track had been cleared for the first phase of KCR revival.
