Rawalpindi: The Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department has announced its decision to impose a new tax on commercial units situated along highways in 24 localities of Rawalpindi District from July 1 onwards – subject to the Punjab government’s approval, according to a news reports published on February 17.

The department had previously given a 30-day period to the owners of commercial units and land to submit their written objections – which were to be referred to the provincial government for consideration.
A senior department official revealed that the government has decided to bring commercial units around provincial/national highways and motorways within the property tax net under the Punjab Finance Act, 2019. He also revealed that a survey has been initiated to identify such properties and tax will be collected from commercial units at the going rate of the district collector.

Reportedly, the department aims to collect tax form hotels, shopping mall, factories and other commercial units. These real estate developments are not part of the tax bracket due to their locations which do not fall under the city administrations’ jurisdiction. Excise and Taxation District Officer Sameer Ahmed told sources these taxes will be imposed in the new fiscal year.
