Islamabad: The government is contemplating taxing plastic bags in a bid to curtail their popular usage, according to Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul.

She informed that the Ministry of Climate Change has proposed a taxable schedule of PKR 1-2 per plastic bag purchase. She added that the government aims to prevent people from using these bags; with the imposition of the said tax currently seen as the only solution.
The ministry has also sought input from all provincial governments with regard to the proposal. A final decision will be taken in light of the suggestions given by the provinces.

Zartaj said that the use of plastic bags can prove hazardous to human lives, as well as other land and sea creatures. She stressed the need to utilise biodegradable or paper bags in order to address environmental concerns.
