Karachi: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has established a Tax Information Processing Unit (TIPU) in a bid to facilitate the broadening of the tax net; specifically, by making all the relevant taxpayer information available across multiple databases for effective processing, according to news sources.

The newly established Tax Information Processing Unit will operate under the Member Inland Revenue (Operations). According to the official announcement, the tax authority stated that there was an impending need for transformation of the existing raw data into meaningful insights. There is information available in multiple FBR databases that this unit will use to suggest actionable steps to field formations and to explore untapped collection avenues, and eliminate potential leakages, the notice added.

The FBR said that it was imperative to engage a cross-functional team of experts at the board to truly realise the potential of Information Technology (IT) systems – developed over the years. The duties of these experts will involve data mining, performing statistical data analysis and offer actionable recommendations.
