Islamabad: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Jahanzeb Khan on Wednesday said that at least 359,694 individuals had filed their tax returns during first seven months of the current fiscal year (FY).

He expressed his views on the matter during a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue. MNA Faizullah presided over the session.
The FBR chief said that the number of filers had gone up by 32% in July-January of FY 2018-19 – as compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year.
Moreover, at least 10,366 association of persons (AoPs) and 7,467 companies had filed their income tax returns during the first seven months of FY2018-19. The total number of tax returns stood at 377,527 for the said period. This figure forms 92% of the tax collection target that the FBR has set for FY2018-19.

In a similar effort, the federal institution is working on reforms in a bid to broaden the country’s tax base. To facilitate this measure, it has identified commercial properties in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad.
