Islamabad: The government’s Task Force on Gems and Jewellery on Thursday held its first meeting – presided over by Engineer Gul Asghar Khan at the Petroleum House – wherein it called for the promotion of an ‘investor-friendly environment’ to boost the country’s export volume, a news source reported.

Engineer Gul Asghar highlighted the need to develop an investor-friendly working environment to capitalise on the potential of gemstone trade. The attendees presented their views on the economic significance and employment-generation potential of this sector in rural areas and deliberated on the steps required for this sector’s growth and enhancement of its contribution to exports.

Moreover, the task force also highlighted the importance of regulating the e-commerce of gemstones and facilitating steps to improve their trade. Various working groups were also formed to initiate focused deliberations on the terms of reference.
The business community representatives appreciated the government’s initiative to promote the local gemstones & jewellery sector and to resolve its issues with coordinated efforts and ‘uniform policy interventions’. The said task force will present its recommendations within 60-days.
