Lahore: The Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project attained its maximum installed generation capacity on Thursday – amounting to a 1,410 Megawatt (MW) contribution to the national grid, according to a news source.
This benchmark was set due to the increased water level in the dam’s reservoir and the enhanced volume of river flows observed this season.
The project is physically situated in Tunnel No. 4 –Tarbela Dam, and features three generating units with a production capacity of 470 MW each. With this extension, the total generation capacity of Tarbela dam has increased from 3,478 MW to 4,888 MW.
Wapda Chairman Lieutenant-General (retired) Muzammil Hussain congratulated the Tarbela Dam authorities on this achievement, and commended the project’s engineers, specifically .
This project has been termed as one of the Water and Power Development Authority’s (WAPDA’s) flagship undertakings; having gone into commission in February 2018, and made completely operational by the middle of 2018.
So far, it has contributed up to 3.14 billion units of low-cost hydel electricity to the national grid
