Islamabad: Expansion of the Tarbela Dam’s Tunnel 4 is expected to start from next week, generating 1,410 MW of electricity. The project commenced in October 2013 and has only been launched now.
Tarbela Dam has five tunnels, two of which are used for irrigation purposes. However, some decades ago, it was suggested that the 4th tunnel could be used for irrigation purposes, and work to make this possible has been underway since 2013.
The project is expected to increase the flow of electricity and lower the electricity shortage in the country. The capacity of the plant after this is expected to increase to 4,888 MW from the existing 3,478 MW.
