Islamabad: The Tarbela 4th Extension hydropower project has contributed a total of 1.471 billion units of low-cost hydroelectricity to the national grid, since its commissioning in March last year, a news source reported.
According to a statement by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), the project is complete. Its annual energy generation is expected to reach 3.84 billion units during the current calendar year.
The 1,410 megawatts Tarbela 4th Extension hydropower project was constructed on Tarbela Dam’s tunnel number 4.
The project has three generating units, each with a capacity of 470 megawatts. It has been envisaged to provide an average of 3.84 billion units of electricity per annum to the grid.
Annual benefits of the project have been estimated at PKR 30 billion.
The WAPDA representative said that Tarbela 4th extension is a component of the ‘least-cost energy generation plan’ being implemented by Wapda on a priority basis. The project is expected to meet the country’s electricity requirements, and increase the ratio of hydroelectricity in the national grid to stabilise electricity tariffs for consumers.
