Karachi: Under the World Bank’s (WB) Solid Waste Emergency and Efficiency Project (SWEEP) – worth USD 11 million– the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has conducted a pre-drone survey of all its 38 nullahs; with a socio-economic management survey of these locations and garbage dump sites also being executed in the city, according to news source published on July 10.
These steps have been taken as per the requirement of the WB and were revealed during a meeting held on Thursday with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah as the chair. The chief minister said that the provincial government has released PKR 229 million to make emergency arrangements for rainy season across the province. He said that these funds have been placed under the disposal of all divisional commissioners.
Shah said that he has issued directives for all the deputy commissioners and municipal commissioners to make the necessary arrangements to deal with excessive rainwater and cleaning of nullahs. He also said that the city’s commissioner has requested for additional funds of PKR 30 million – which have been granted. He revealed that the WB has made plans to invest USD 100 million in improving the city’s solid waste management system.
The project was proposed in November 2019 and envisages an enhancement of garbage transfer stations (as per the international standards), setting up of a new landfill site and enhancement of an existing landfill site – among other improvements.
Addressing the meeting, Minister for Local Government Nasir Hussain Shah said that special rain emergency cells have been established at the offices of the Local Government, commissioners, deputy commissioners, municipal committees and a dedicated complaint centre with helpline number 1093 has been established.
