Lahore: A survey conducted by the Civil Defence Department and Rescue 1122 has revealed that 460 buildings in the city lack proper fire-safety arrangements, according to a news source. As per officials, the survey results do not include findings on fire-safety situation in buildings owned by the government.
According to the findings, the high-rise buildings lack emergency exits, fire hydrants, fire alarms, chemical fire extinguishers, and related tools. Taking notice of the situation, the ex-commissioner of Lahore. Dr Mujtaba Paracha imposed a PKR 50,000 fine on owners of these buildings and directed them to ensure the provision of these arrangements on an immediate basis.
The ex-commissioner also instructed the officials concerned to conduct an inquiry into the matter. According to sources, these buildings were later sealed on report of non-compliance.
Taking notice of the situation, Lahore Commissioner Asif Bilal Lodhi directed the Metropolitan Corporation Lahore (MCL), planning officers, and other departments concerned to ensure the availability of safety equipment in the buildings located in their respective areas.
