Karachi: The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan has ordered the city administration of Karachi to demolish illegally built marriage halls and marquees on Korangi Road, news sources reported on February 06). The three-member panel ruled that 35 marquees constructed on residential property allocated to the owners by the two private developers should be demolished.

The apex court remarked that the marriage hall owners had paid a particular sum to the regulatory agencies for the relevant property to be converted into commercial land to construct wedding halls. However, the authorities never provided formal conversion and regularisation letters to the owners for the conversion to take effect. The apex court further stated that these demolition orders are a continuation of the implementation order granted by the supreme court in a suit filed by the previous city Nazim in 2010.

The administrative committee of the Supreme Court, chaired by the then Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), at its sitting on October 17, 2020, therefore instructed the commissioner to dismantle the marquees. The new orders constitute a continuation of the previous two orders and so stand. The orders are among numerous issued by the SC Karachi registry to demolish illegal constructions in the city to restore the city’s master plan.
