Islamabad: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, chaired by Junaid Akbar on Monday (August 16) created a subcommittee to monitor the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority’s (ERRA) work on the New Balakot City Development project, news sources reported.

The subcommittee will consist of three members of the parliament Saleh Muhammad Swati, Muhammad Sajjad, and Syed Agha Rafiullah.
The Balakot City project was inaugurated in 2007 by then President Musharaff and was estimated to cost PKR 13 billion. However, the project remained incomplete even after 13 years.

The Sub-committee formed to supervise ERRA’s work is mandated to work under two Terms of Reference (ToRs):
- To resolve the matter referred by the Speaker’s Office on 30-06-2021 regarding release of funds for the victims of Suki Kanari Hydro Power Dam Project at River Kunhar, District Mansehra.
- To monitor progress of the ERRA on the development projects in District Mansehra and New Balakot.
The project was expected to complete in four phases, however, so far only two phases could be completed.
