Karachi: Pakistan Association of Large Steel Producers Secretary General Syed Wajid Bukhari recently intimated a request to Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan to allow the steel industry to resume its operations on account of its crucial linkage to the construction sector — a news source reported. As per the publication, this request has come in the wake of the PM’s recent announcement regarding the opening of the construction industry from April 14 onward.

Bukhari also took the opportunity to praise the construction package, saying that it would provide a stimulus to the economy, and open up job opportunities for the country’s workforce.
The secretary general further stated that steel was the backbone of the construction industry, and urged the government to allow the sector to be operational once again; especially the steel mills that have labour colonies for their workforce within the premises of their plants. He added that in his opinion, about 70% to 80% of the steel industry could become functional once again by taking proper safety precautions against the spread of novel coronavirus.
Additionally, Bukhari said that any delay in opening up steel mills would ultimately delay production, which would in turn delay the government’s initiative to revive the construction sector.
