Gilgit: The Special Protection Unit (SPU) recently received vehicles for the protection of foreigners currently engaged in the projects initiated under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), a news source reported.

G-B Police Chief Sanaullah Abbasi handed over keys of the vehicles purchased to SPU SP Mir Tufail Ahmed during a ceremony held at the central police office in Gilgit.
Abbasi said that the SPU had been established for the protection of the foreigners, including Chinese citizens, who were working on the CPEC projects in the region. He added that the purchase of the vehicles was aimed at improving the performance of the SPU.
The police chief revealed that over a dozen vehicles had arrived in Gilgit during the first phase. He added that the remaining set of vehicles would also arrive soon.
Addressing the ceremony, Abbasi stated that they had appointed 500 personnel in SPU, and the individuals were undergoing training. He added that they plan to equip the body with modern facilities and trainings to enhance security of the foreigners.

Abbasi also said that in addition to Gilgit, Hunza, Diamer, and Skardu would be equipped with the SPU headquarters.
Meanwhile, SP Tufail stated that G-B was a safe destination for both tourist and foreign workers; with additional security measures in the works. He revealed that the SPU would get operational after Eid-ul-Azha.
