Karachi: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Wednesday, has issued directions for all commercial banks to waive off the online transaction charges in a bid to encourage people to stay indoors in the wake of coronavirus infection outbreak, according to news sources.

The state bank has issued instructions for the banks to waive off online transaction fees they charge from consumers for using online banking channels like Inter Bank Fund Transfer (IBFT) and SBPs Real Time Gross Settlement System for customers during COVID-19 pandemic.

This is one of the cautionary steps taken by the SBP to meet the challenge of the coronavirus infection. The official statement reads that ‘this step will enable the people to conduct their transactions without having to visit the bank or use the ATM’. Banks have also received directions to facilitate consumers in use of the online banking and ensure safety of their funds.
Furthermore, the SBP has also directed banks to be more efficient in the provision of 24/7 instant customer support services via call centres and helplines. The finance industry has also been instructed to accommodate educational charges and loan instalments through internet/mobile banking.
